Figurative Exhibition

Creative arecurrently featuring three popular figurative artists in the gallery, Fabian Perez, Al Saralis and David Cobley.

Each artist portrays the subject in their own distinctive style - Perez ooze’s Passion, Saralis withvulnerability and Cobley conveys solitude.

Perez grew up outside Buenos Aires in a turbulent world of political upheaval, where he had an unusual upbringing. His father owned a number of brothels and illegal nightclubs in Campana. It was this lifestyle that influenced Perez, being constantly exposed to beautiful women who could seduce a man “simply by lighting a cigarette”. We see these “ladies of the night” exquisitely portrayed in many of Fabian’s paintings - memories of his youth and the nightlife he observed.

Fascination with the form, structure and movement of the figure continues to be central to Al’s work. His paintings usually consist of a single figure that is stripped of any narrative reference. Recent works have included a series of images where the figure has been fragmented or left incomplete, resulting in work that is powerful, sometimes confrontational and echoes the vulnerability of the contemporary man.

“These days my work is almost entirely about the figure, and how it is affected by the light that falls on and around it. Like many others before me, I am looking for ways of creating drama, mystery and magic in my work.” And it is this drama and mystery that Cobley manages to achieve in his female portraits – conveying the sense of strong and powerful yet lonely and vulnerable women.

Darren Baker - Olympic Hopeful

One of our newest artists, successful comtemporary realist, Darren Baker has been invited to team up with Lloyds TSB in their role as majoy sponsors of the 2012 London Olympics. His work will be exhibited at The Royal Horse Show at Windsor, The Henley Regatta and Wimbledon, as well as at a range of major arts events such as the Edinburgh Festival. Darren will be showing his Olympic based artwork at the shows. In April he will be attending a huge Olympic events in London that will be attended by major Olmpic names led by Seb Coe.His aim is to be named as an offical Olympic artist.

This week's window - Carol Gillian

This week's window sees the display of Carol Gillian's quirky animal portraits.

Carol was born in Lancashire in 1961 and studied art in Brighton. After working as an illustrator on a variety of projects she finally decided to devote herself to a career as a full time fine artist. Now based in Surrey she paints from a studio in her home and specialises in dramatic and humorous animal portraits.

Carol travels to County fairs for inspiration and often accosts dog walkers when she sees a dog that she would like to paint. Due to the nature of her work (or rather the nature of her sitters) she tends to make extensive use of photographs that she feels best capture the individual identity of the animal in question. These allow her to achieve an informal, composed painting which is both a realistic likeness and a uniquely distinctive interpretation.

Carol prefers to work in oil on canvas. Over-painting thin layers of oils she slowly builds up the image, closely cropping the actual subject to maximize its impact and presenting it against a solid background of vibrant colour. She employs the medium of oil because it adds such depth to each image, enabling her to portray the texture of an animal's coat, the shadows of its muscle tone, and especially its personality which she believes can be conveyed through the expression in its eyes.

Carol's work has been exhibited widely across the UK and Europe and she has undertaken a variety of impressive commissions for individuals and corporations. In 2006 she was awarded first prize in the prestigious DeMontfort New Artist competition.

Peter Wileman - President of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters

Award winning artist Peter Wileman has just been elected President of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. Peter has been a part of the art world since leaving school in the 1960s and has been a member of the institute for many years. His powerful oil painting's are characterised by expressive, painterly techniques and demonstrate an atmospheric impact that few contemporary artists can hope to rival.

"I am delighted to be asked to take up this position. I have been the society's Vice President for several years and have seen some extraordinary work by artists of the hightest calibre. Offering this contribution to ongoing success of the society is a great honour and i feel both excited and hugely honoured."

The institution has held a prestigious place in the art world since its inception in 1882. Granted royal status in 1909 by Edward VII it has embraced many of Britain's most illustrious oil painters and it is great pride that Peter steps into the role.

Technically brilliant, stylistically virtuosic and endlessy observant, Sherree is a favourite with many celebrity collectors including members of the Royal Family. Famous show-buisness figures has sat for her including Joanna Lumley and Michael Parkinson, and as offical artist to the Rugby World Cup she produced some magificant commemorative portraits of Johny Wilkinson and Martin Johnson. Artwork on Grand Designs

Limited Editions and Original artwork by Creative's artists Jonathan Shaw and David Cobley were featured on Channel 4's Grand Designs; in an unique architectural designed 10-sided shaped house in Oxford.

The contemporary style build was made up of several decagons (10 sided shapes). The artwork of David Cobley; a showcase of six stirking yet senstivie female nudes where shown alongside Jonathan Shaw's sweeping skies, vivid colours and smouldering horizons.

Alison Parry

Up-and-Coming contemporary Artist Alison Parry now has some works available to view and buy online.
After studying Fine Art at Southampton Solent University, Alison has gone onto working at galleries as well as continuing her personal practice. She has since exhibited in Southampton, Nottingham, Oxfordshire and Plymouth. After a successful exhibition at Creative Art Gallery during Artweeks last year in Woodstock, Alison has gone on to exhibit as part of Art in Woodstock and also has a new piece of work on display at Modern Art Oxford.
Her work uses a variety of techniques to portray her on-going theme of memories and emotions.

This Weeks Window - David Cobley

A new exhibition by renowned figure painter David Cobley is now on exhibition in the Gallery. We are showcasing six new striking yet sensitive female nudes.

David Cobley studied at Northampton and LiverpoolSchoolsof Art. He belongs to the Royal Society of Portrait Paintersand the New English Art Club, as well as being a member of the Royal West of England Academy (RWA). His work is based soundly in his skills as a draughtsman, and he divides his time between commissioned portraits and oils of the figure. His sitters include The Princess Royal and Steven Berkoff. His Portrait of Ken Dodd was acquired by the National Portrait Gallery.

Local Artist Terry Wigley's collection is now available to view and buy online

Terry Wigley uses traditional photography. He has been building up a portfolio of work covering the Eastern Cotswolds for the last 10 years. He sells his work as framed Art work and concentrates solely on landscape photography.

“In my case it started with the time I spent as a youngster growing up in the fifties. Brought up in villages, a lot of my spare time was spent outdoors wandering across the fields. This gave me the opportunity to enjoy myself, with little restriction on where I went. This interest has not diminished over the years and it has evolved to become my favourite subject. I love the sense of space and isolation that can be found.

It is difficult to be precise as to when I first started enjoying photography but I do remember my girlfriend (now my wife) and my brother, buying me a camera for my twenty first birthday. This was a Penteflex S.L. and although not an iconic brand, armed with that and my light meter I recorded many different scenes over the years. Gradually I found myself focusing more and more on landscape work and there are examples at home of pictures that I liked and had framed from as long ago as 1985. By chance six years ago I was given the opportunity to take part in an exhibition and following this I have become much more focused. I am constantly striving to take dramatic pictures and my subject matter is totally related to the landscape. Since starting to build this portfolio, I have become much more aware of how the seasons change, where the sun rises and sets and how much impact nature has on the multitude of colours in the countryside. It is also worth noting how much our farmers do, by adding a tapestry of patterns and colours with their various activities and crop rotations.

I love the purity of nature and deliberately avoid man made structures or objects that interfere with a natural composition. My camera is a Nikon S.L.R.and I use Fuji Velvia transparency film, none of my work has been digitally manipulated or computer enhanced. Taking a picture that is good enough is not the main challenge. Finding a suitable subject at the right time of the year, with near perfect light and achieving a stunning impact is much more difficult.”

Local Sculputor - Rob Good

Creative Art Gallery was introduced to Sculptor Rob Good through this year’s Art in Woodstock festival, the first of an annual event celebrating the visual arts in Woodstock, an event which the gallery is involved in organizing

Rob Good is an Oxford born artist who studied Sculpture at the University of Leeds, where he was awarded a 1st Class BA (Hons) degree in 2005. Prior to this he received a distinction for Foundation Studies in Fine Art from North Oxfordshire College of Art and Design. Rob’s work has been exhibited in several venues around the country including Stroud, Huddersfield, Brighton and Oxford.

The series entitled ‘Branch Out’ has developed from a project started in the final year of his university education. The intention was to create an installation using the limbs of a felled tree. Branches where to be arranged dynamically in an established space; however, an economy drive by the university resulted in a change of location of Fine Art studios and the graduating class of 2005 found themselves without adequate facilities and unsure of a venue for their final exhibition. With these problems in mind, Rob started to create a series of boxes merely as an aid; to establish his own space within an overcrowded studio in which he could experiment with different compositions of branches and twigs.
The boxes soon became an integral part of the work, and the working models grew into sculptures in their own right. The cubes offer a dialogue with the irregularity of the branches, and create a contrived union between the man-made world and that of nature. As these two worlds are forced together, a struggle unfolds between the boxes normal state of containment and the natural woods desire to grow and expand.

Fabian Perez - San Telmo

San Telmo is one of the oldest districts in Buenos Aires; it was also the wealthiest until the 1870s when many residents started relocating to more spacious areas. The ancient cobbled streets of San Telmo then began to come into their own; the city's oldest square, the Plaza Dorrego, became home to dancers and musicians, the old colonial buildings transformed into bars and clubs, and as the social climbers moved out, the Tango moved in!

World-renowned South American artist Fabian Perez is in an unique position to convey the atmosphere of this seductive and glamorous world having spent his childhood amongst some of its more striking characters.

Born in 1967, Fabian grew up outside Buenos Aires in a turbulent world of political upheaval during the post-Peron military regime. Such a childhood could not fail to impact on every area of his life including his artistic ethos, especially when taken in conjunction with his unconventional upbringing.

At the age of 9 he became fascinated with the paintbrush, and using watercolors and tempera he painted portraits of his friends and family. His mother, Edua Herreria, a beautiful Brazilian women, met his father, a handsome and charismatic ladies’ man, Antonio Perez, in the late 1950’s, in Campana, a small city outside Buenos Aires.

Edua was the creative force in Fabian’s life and Antonio was the inspiration for his work. Fabian witnessed his father’s unorthodox and often difficult life, portraying him in his paintings as “the cool guy” outside nightclubs and bordellos. Antonio owned a number of brothels and illegal nightclubs in Campana, and was frequently chased and closed down by the police. Nevertheless the young Fabian was constantly exposed to beautiful women who could seduce a man “simply by lighting a cigarette”. Today we see these “ladies of the night” exquisitely portrayed in many of Fabian’s paintings - memories of his youth and the nightlife he observed. At the age of 16 Fabian was faced with the loss of his mother and 3 years later the loss of his father. The sadness and despair he experienced left him confused and searching for answers.

This formidable collection of hand-embellished Canvas Editions represents Fabian's figurative gift at its most impressive; his controlled yet passionate compositional style allows these beautifully described, authentic figures to live and breathe against the distinctive backdrop of a sulty San Telmo night.

Home by the Sea - Philip Gray - Fine Art Trade Guild Best up-and-Coming Artist 2007

Philip's achievements over the last year have ranged from winning a highly convered artist's award to represetning Ireland in a major cultural festival organized and hosted by Dolly Parton.

Widely acknowledged as a modern master of the seascape genre, he has attracted the attention of Prime Minsters and American Presidents, and his work has hung in the White House under two different administrations.

Yet despite all this international success, Philip has never lost sight of reality and lives a grounded family life back home in Ireland. The familiarity, friendliness, and of course the famour Irish charm keep him on an even keel and allow his creativty to flourish. Proximity t0 the Coast is also essential to Philip; he describes the 17 years he spent as a diver in the Navy as 'a period of study' that gave him 'the confidence to paint the sae with genuine understanding, and to become a part of what i'm painting.'

This experience also offered him a unique perspective on Irish landscapes and seascapes seens from the Atlantic Ocean rather than the more conventional shoreline views.

Half a Million for Vettriano Original at Auction

A Painting by Jack Vettriano fetched £468,000 at a Sotheby's auction this September. 'Bluebird at Bonneville' (as seen above) was commissioned by Sir Terrence Conran 10 years ago for the Bluebird club in Kings Road, Chelsea. This classic contemporary image shows Sir Malcolm Cambell's celebrated land speed record-setting car against the white sands of the Utah Salt Flats in 1935.

Vettriano has said about the series of paintings he did for Sir Conran; “I was thrilled when Sir Terence Conran approached me with the project. The brief was pretty clear: ‘I know you have to paint cars, but try to make them sexy’. “I did a lot of research on the subject and spent six weeks in my studio producing the works - that’s slow for me. I then waited for the dreaded call. He loved them.”

Peter comments that in the early stages of a painting he tries to "get the colours talking to each other," and anyone who has ever seen one of his dazzling landscapes or abstracts knows that the dialogue he creates this way is masterly.

Artists Sherree Valentine Daines and Henderson Cisz have recently been awarded two prestigious awards.

Summer 2007 saw the launch of one of the most collectable items of the year. 'First Impressions', a beautiful hardback book by Sherree Valentine Daines created quite a stir across the Uk, and the launch party in Notting Hill Gate was packed with collectors, critics and celebrity guests. Yet again the Fine Art Trade Guild has recognized London-based Brazilian artist Henderson Cisz in honour of his magnificent cityscapes. Whilst last year Henderson was acknowledged as Best New Artist, he has now been named as Artist of the Year and recently won the 2007 John Solomon Trophy- a good year all round for Mr Cisz! - an award for the artist who has made the most impact in the marketplace over the year. Doug Hyde and Jack Vettriano were also in the top 10. These awards came to no surprise within the industry as he has made an outstanding contribution to the contemporary art scene in this country over the year

Local Artist - Alison Parry

Among those exhibiting in Art in Woodstock are three recent graduates who all live locally and whose work is all very different. They are Alison Parry, exhibiting at Creative Art Gallery, Emma Smith at the Old School House and Sarah Moncrieff, exhibiting at the local garage!
Environmentally minded Emma returned to University as a mature student and Sarah changed direction entirely to pursue her artistic talent. Alison traveled for 6 months before emabarking on her degree at University.

Emma has recently completed a two year part-time foundation course in Fine Art which has given birth to a new direction in her art. her paintings in acrylic and oil on canvas and metal and collage prints, all embody a bold abstract style, exploring colour and shape alongside issues of humanity and the environment.

Exhibiting at Creative Art Gallery - will be in attendance on 24th to 27th OctoberAlison graduated with a 2:1 in Fine Art from Southampton Solent University in July 2006. The central focus of her work is memories. Sarah Moncrieff Painter - Cityscapes

Sarah is an artist living and working in Woodstock. She has been painting all her life but in the last few years decided to give up her career as a Solicitor and return to University to study Fine Art in order to concentrate on painting full time. Since graduating in 2005, Sarah has had several solo exhibitions and has been involved in numerous group shows. Her paintings are sold in various galleries and she is also a freelance knitwear designer, selling her designs to various national publications. She now teaches art for Oxford County Council's Adult Education department and on a private basis.

Art in Woodstock - Artist Alison Parry at Creative Art Gallery

WOODSTOCK is staging a celebration of the visual arts, which will take place from October 23 to 28, and involve most of the shops, hotels, and galleries in town.

Even the local garage and the old school is taking part.

Artist Alison Parry, pictured, who works at the Creative Art gallery, in High Street, is particularly excited about the celebrations, as several of her atmospheric abstract works will be on display in the gallery. They will be hung alongside several very colourful paintings by the highly acclaimed, award-winning artist Peter Wileman, vice-president of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. He will be at the Creative Art gallery from 1pm to 4pm on Saturday, October 27, to talk about his work.

Other establishments, such as the Marlborough Arms hotel, will be staging talks. On Thursday, a panel discussion on The Artist's Ego will take place there at 7.30pm, and on Friday, at 7.30pm, Tom Kemp will be asking What's The Point of Art?, while Nick Owen discusses photography.

There are also artist's workshops throughout the week, including a drawing workshop with the popular children's book illustrator Korky Paul, who will be inviting children aged eight to 14 to join him at the town hall from 2pm to 3pm on Thursday, October 25. Those who know Korky's work or have watched him interact with a group of youngsters don't need to be told this workshops will probably prove to be one of the highlights of the the celebration.

A drop-in workshop with sculptor Anne Carrington for children aged from five to 16 will take place in the Woodstock Museum gardens from 11am to 4pm on Saturday. For children who enjoy landscape painting, George Mogg will be staging a morning workshop for children aged five to eight, and an afternoon workshop for older children at the Marlborough School, on Sunday, October 28.

On walking around the town, visitors will discover that there are works of art in virtually every shop window - making Woodstock a great place to visit next week.

A seasoned traveller, Henderson Cisz has spent time in Europe, Australia and of course his native South America. This week sees American Artist Eric Waugh's festive music originals in the window - just in time for Woodstook Live - An array of musical talent playing throughout the town. Listen...enjoy...wander the town...eat, drink, bop and be merry!!

Born in Montreal in 1963, Eric Waugh showed an early talent for art and design, as well as a strong head for business. These two skills were united when, barely in his twenties, he started his own company; distributing gifts when he designed, packaged, manufactured and marketed himself.

During this time his brother, a successful art dealer, encouraged Eric to take a risk and produce some fine art of his own. Eventually he was persuaded and the rest is history! New Artist - Michael McGuire

We are excited to unveil some new originals by Michael McGuire, a recently new artist to the gallery.

Michael’s vibrant marine images are derived largely from his imagination, but influenced by the colours and contours of his home on the Eastern Seaboard of the United States and his favourite location of Isla Mujeres, Mexico.

Michael was born in Massachusetts in 1953. After completing his formal training in sculpture, he began to feel a need for more colour in his work and moved on to painting in oils. His paintings demonstrate a natural progression from his previous work in that they are almost three-dimensional in nature.

Michael builds up the surface of each image with layers of paint, applying it with knifes. This gives him a similar experience to that derived from building with clay or plaster, but adding the dimension of colour.

“I prefer to mould and mix the paint directly on the canvas. While working with three dimensions has always been enjoyable, the use of a flat surface allows me to experiment with contrasting colours and planes of light which I find particularly rewarding.”

This Week's Window - Rebecca Lardner

This week sees Dorset Artist Rebecca Lardner in the Window.

Rebecca's work has an upbeat charm that perfectly captures the new mood of the South West, which over the last few years has transformed itself from a largely unfashionable tourist destination, into an ultra-desirable destination for a whole cross section of society, from surfers to TV chefs.

Born in Purbeck Swanage, she studied art in Liverpool and then travelled the world from Ireland to India selling her work. Although she had some amazing experiences, the tug of the turning tide eventually pulled her back to Dorset where she set up her studio and made tracks for the coast.

"Dazzling contemporary interpretations of the traditional harbour scene from an exceptional artistic talent."

Rebecca's engaging oils on canvas are animated portrayals of a hectic life lived on the land and the sea. The large ensemble cast of figures, boats and sea birds, creates a lively impression of ceaseless activity, and this is heightened by the natural curves of the classic English harbour which provide a strong sense of movement and energy. So not only has the status of this coastline been officially recognised with its designation as a world heritage site, its artistic value has now also been brought to all of our notice by a genuine local hero.

Art in Woodstock

The pretty market town of Woodstock will play host to Art in Woodstock, a major visual artist festival from 23th- 28^th October 2007. Showcasing work by visiting professional artists and local talent, this brand new initiative from Wake up to Woodstock will see the whole of Woodstock transformed into a celebration of visual arts.

Individual art exhibitions will be held in shops and restaurants, the Woodstock art galleries will host exhibitions, and a triangular art wall will be erected in the town square for visitors to contribute to, creating a unique work of art reflecting Woodstock and its community; there will be exhibitions, workshops, demonstrations as well as talks by eminent artists, critics and authorities in their field (see next page). Art and photographic competitions will be held, as well as a competition for local schools.

The competition winners’ work will be exhibited in the town during the event. The Open Art Competition, ‘Inspired by Woodstock’, will be judged by Professor Martin Kemp, Professor of Art History at Oxford University. The competition prizes will be presented by Rosita Spencer-Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough, with Peter Wileman, Vice President of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters at an awards ceremony on 27^t October 2007.

Summer Exhibition

The wet weather is not dampening Creative Art Gallery’s Summer Exhibition of Original Artwork and Limited Editions featuring five new international artists to the gallery covering a variety of styles and mediums.

Harry Brioche was born in the Seychelles in 1965 of Creole and American parentage, however it is the moody skies of the UK that have captured his imagination more than the famously beautiful surroundings of his upbringing. His beautifully lit scenes in oils of the British Countryside are strongly influenced by masters of the landscape Turner and Vernet.

Danielle O’Connor Akiyama is a Canadian artist based in Toronto who has been painting for over 30 years, during which time her flamboyant artwork has become highly sought after worldwide. Her exhilarating floral images are vibrant with life, energy and riotous colour. Her deceptively loose and impressionistic style disguises the intricacy of her brush work and the stylish formality of each delicate composition.

The work of Tuscan Artist Bruno Tinucci also employs a distinct pallette of stunning vibrant colours to interpret both the appearance and the atmosphere of this most beautiful of landscapes. He has a unique initiative ability to capture the vivid scarlet of a field of poppies, the golden shades of a sunflower in full bloom and the changing light of the seasons in his striking oil paintings.

He has exhibited his work in many galleries across the US and Europe and been commissioned to do murals by businesses and nightclubs in cities as diverse as Miami and Athens.

Applicants had to explain how their company delivered that 'little bit more' to their customers and the community.

Artweeks was a great success so a big thank you to everyone who came.The exhibition was an eclectic mix of work, comprising of photographs, paintings, colograph prints and mosaic pots. Artists Alison Parry and Joanna Hutt did very well and definitely worth keeping an eye on!

Joanna’s mosaic work is inspired by light and reflection. The pots are designed to stand where they can be touched by light. When sun light hits one of my pots the whole room becomes splattered with fragments of reflected light and looks quite breathtaking.

"Most of her mosaic work is done using broken materials. She likes everything to look as though it has just 'happened'. “I never use measurements and never try to plan anything too much. I guess I don't like the designs to look orderly or practiced!”

Alison is a contemporary artist who has recebtly graduated. The central locus of her work is memories. By exploring a variety of different techniques, such as paint, print, sound and video, Alison portrays her concept and ideas in many different ways.

The group of paintings shown in artweeks came from a series called Seasons. Each set of 4 deals with a different season, the change in weather, appearance within the landscape and her thoughts at the time. She has explored different paint and painting techniques, pushing the boundaries of what paint can do in order to depict the moment.

She uses distorted text in her work. She comments on the change both physically within the landscape and emotionally within her, her thoughts and feelings, prehaps those that she never wanted to fully reveal.

Creative Art Gallery are excited to announce that we will be introducing Rolf Harris's artwork to the gallery over the next couple of weeks.

Rolf has always loved art - even before he went to Primary School, whenever anyone asked him "What are you going to be when you grow up?" his immediate response was "An artist!".
After leaving school he enrolled at the City & Guilds Art School in London witn the intention of following in his grandfather's footsteps as a portrait artist. However after a chance meeting with the Australian impressionist painter 'Bill' Hayward Veal, he began attending an art course run by Veal and soon became his protégé.

In the mid 50's Rolf became a household name following his television and stage performances. Rolf's BBC television series Rolf on Art achieved the highest television ratings ever for a UK arts programme. Rolf hosted television's biggest ever Arts event with a live BBC special titled Rolf on Art: The Big Event, in which he joined the public in recreating a large-scale version of Constable's 'Haywain' in Trafalgar Square. The massive event was such a huge success that the BBC staged two further Rolf on Art: The Big Event specials in Edinburgh and London. In recent years Rolf has devoted more time to painting and has had a number of one-man shows, including the Rolf on Art exhibition at the National Gallery.

Chris Parks is more widely known for his ocean photography and film work with his Oscar winning father Peter Parks. Chris creates an ethereal world through his dynamic fluid paintings which capture light, movement and depth in totally unique way. The fluid paintings are created using mixed media within a liquid medium which continually change and develop over time until frozen at a particular moment through the use of specialist photography equipment. Nothing is digitally manipulated in any way. The images only exist for a moment before they evolve into something different and the desired effect is gone forever. The influences that inspire Chris in the creation of the images are drawn from his discoveries whilst filming some of the smallest organisms that inhabit the world’s oceans.

Chris studied Engineering at Imperial College, London then Design at the Royal College of Art, London. It is this rare combination of engineer, artist and photographer that enables Chris to create his unique artwork.

Susan was born in Yorkshire and graduated from Leeds with a BA Honours degree in Three Dimensional Design in 1979. She went on to become a highly respected interior designer but in her spare time worked on her personal passion, fine art painting.

Now an established artist, Susan creates bold and vibrant images which present what she describes as the real world. She sees them as an interpreted record of life through architectural studies of existing surroundings. These explore the mathematics, rhythm and movement within structures and the relationship between man and the built environment in an exciting and immediate style. Her background in design has given her an exceptional command of colour, texture and pattern, which gives these images a dual quality of technical and aesthetic beauty.

Susan is an elected member of both the Chartered Society of Designers and the Society of Architectural Illustrators. Official recognition has also come in the form of awards at the Laing Art Competition, Hunting Art Prizes and Singer & Friedlander/Sunday Times Competition. Her paintings can be found in a number of prestigious collections including those of Dame Janet Baker, the Sir George Martin Trust, Arthur Anderson, Benningbrough Hall, The National Trust, Halifax plc, Natwest Bank and Provident Financial.

Born in 1963 in Des Moines, Lowa, he was deeply influenced by the rolling hills and expressive forms in the landscape of his own state. He became interested in art at an early age and experimented with many techniques, mediums and styles during his youth. Eventually he has come to focus on abstract pieces, expressing emotion and idea through shape and colour.

In 1987 he graduated from the University of Lowa with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. After college, he travelled throughout the United States and Mexico, learning from many styles of art he came across.

He finally settled in New York City in 1990. He continues to live there, constantly innovating his art, incorporating aspects of many cultures and ideas present in the city. His work communicates the vibrancy and poetry he experiences in his life; he shares his vision through colour and expressive form.

Using mixed media within a liquid medium, Chris creates moving fluid paintings which continually change and develop over time and are frozen at a particular moment in time through the use of photography.

All the paintings are naturally occurring events that Chris creates in his studio using organic ingredients. Nothing is digitally manipulated in any way: all colours are visible at the time of capturing the image. Organic particles are used to add a natural randomness to the flow and feel of the images. The paintings only exist for a moment before they evolve into something different and the desired effect is gone forever.

Having studied Engineering at Imperial College, London and then Design at the Royal College of Art, London , much of Chris's professional life has been concerned with the oceans, film and photography. The fluid paintings that he creates are both inspired by, and draw on the movements and dynamics that he has discovered whilst filming some of the smallest organisms that inhabit the oceans.

It is this rare combination of engineer, artist and photographer, combined with his experiences under the sea, that has enabled Chris to produce work that is not only created in a way that is totally unique, but which is also unparalleled in its fluidity, movement and subtlety.

Jonathan was born in Leeds in 1959. As a child he always loved to paint and stood in awe of his father, a professional artist. He always felt he was destined to follow in his father’s footsteps, but after leaving school found himself working in a variety of jobs, and finally finding a creative position as an interior designer.

He knew that this was not the life for him however, and eventually resigned from his job to go travelling, financing his journey with money raised from selling his work along the way. The realisation that he was able to sell his work so easily filled Jonathan with confidence and resolve, and he returned home to Yorkshire to open a gallery. Surrounded by artwork that he admired and seeing the positive response of his customers encouraged him to paint some of his best ever work. After six years in the gallery, Jonathan felt it was time to move on and took the bold step of dedicating himself full-time to painting.

His new found confidence led him to abandon his methodical style in favour of more spontaneous “free” painting onto canvas and board. He found this new approach to be stimulating and exciting, and has never looked back.

In 1999, Jonathan was elected a Fellow of the British Society of Painters and the International Guild of Artists, and in 2003 he was shortlisted for the Fine Art Trade Guild award for Best Up and Coming Artist. His work is held in private collections and galleries throughout the UK, Europe and the USA, and his celebrity collectors include Dawn French and Lenny Henry.

This Week's Window - Cyril Croucher

Cyril was born in 1951 and grew up in Shoeburyness, a small village in the East of England. He graduated from Southend-on-Sea Art College in the swinging sixties and set out to establish himself as a professional artist. Dissatisfied with the work he was producing and following the death of his father, Cyril stopped painting and, as he puts it, “rejoined the real world and got a proper job”. For the next twenty years he worked in various trades, from boat building to gardening, and finally settled into a successful career as a property surveyor.

It was only when he moved to Cornwall with his family that he started to paint again - unable to help himself in the face of so much inspirational material! It was the houses and boats in their quaint harbour settings that interested him most, and thus his present style was born and began to evolve.

Together with his wife he bought and extended the Millpool Gallery which is in Mousehole, a beautiful unspoiled fishing village in the far west of the county, and began to exhibit his new work. From then he has not looked back; his work has grown in popularity at an amazing rate, and he has held numerous successful exhibitions across the South West of England. When asked what he gets out of painting Cyril replies, “happiness.”

This Week's Window - Malcolm Teasdale

Malcolm's roots are firmly planted in the North East of England, an area whose character and landscape has been defined by its industrial history. His forefathers were lead miners working the seams on bleak Alston Moor, and successive generations coal mined in Tynedale and close to Newcastle.

Malcolm himself was born in the Elswick district of Newcastle in 1944, and lived and worked for much of his life near to the city. For the past twenty years he has lived in a market town in Northumberland. Malcolm’s passion for painting has always been an integral part of his life. In his early career as a teacher his interest in art took up much of his spare time, and in more recent years he has occupied three galleries in the North East and has devoted more and more time to his painting. He holds regular solo exhibitions all over the UK, and one such exhibition, 'A Glimpse of the Great North', was televised by the BBC.

Much of Malcolm’s work has arisen from the industrial history of his local area. His love of these locations and his genuine admiration for the scenes and characters he recreates comes across in the strong sense of community and camaraderie that defines all of his highly evocative work. It is the honesty of his approach that sets his work apart from his contemporaries however; he has an extraordinary ability to convey the reality of everyday life and the atmosphere of each scene, rather than simply to recreate the literal image.

“For me my personal identity has always been linked with a sense of social togetherness which was so much a part of my own childhood, and it is this sense of loyalty and shared experience that I aim to capture in my paintings.”

This Week's Window - Heather McAlpine

Heather McAlpine was born in Scotland 1962 she moved to London to study where she received a BA in Fine Art (1st class Hons) from the University of East London and an MA in painting from the RCA.

She has exhibited widely in the UK including the RCA Summer Show.

Emigrating to Vancouver in 1999 she continues to be inspired by the natural world. "The West Coast forests and sea have provided inspiration for my recent paintings; armed with my camera and macro lens I collect images of seaweed, leaves and lichen, this provides the ‘raw materials’ the starting points for back in the studio." The actual material of paint and the painterly marks serve as metaphors for energy, movement and growth. Rich texture is achieved by building up layers of color, suggesting time and evolution, during the process the images become pared down leaving elemental marks.

"My ultimate aim is to explore the relationships between abstraction, color and the vitality of the natural world."

Creative Art Gallery - Official Opening Party featuring Cisz & Hyde

Creative Art Gallery hosted its official opening on Saturday 28th October with an exhibition of two contrasting artists, Henderson Cisz and Doug Hyde. Well over 100 visitors attended the event and enjoyed champagne and canapes whilst viewing the pieces on display.

Henderson Cisz has become a highly sought after artist following his award as Best Up and Coming Artist by the Fine Art Trade Guild earlier this year and we were pleased to be able to present two original pieces in addition to his Limited Edition collection.

"Smile" was the collection featured by Doug Hyde and included "Any Room for Me", "Brits Abroad" and "Beauty Sleep".

Aston Promotions Charity Ball in aid of Willen Hospice

The team from Creative Art Gallery were dancing on the tables and wrestling on the floor (don't ask why! - apparently the lead singer of the band said something about getting on the floor and it was taken too literally!) at Aston Promotions Charity Ball in Aid of Willen Hospice (Milton Keynes) on Saturday 14th October.

Creative have supported the Charity through a charitable contribution by the Gallery on every purchase made by guests who collected a Willen Hospice vouchure at the ball.

Linda describes herself as a 'contextual' painter, who views each composition as part of a whole imagined interior landscape. She is a firm believer in the connection between colour and mood, and her positive personality leads her to select a vivid and uplifting range of hues.

Linda's background in fashion and textile design has had a profound effect on her work, with texture playing a vital part in the finished image. Each piece is carefully created layer by layer using acrylics offset by gold leaf, which lends a spectacular intensity to the finished image.

Sherree was born in Effingham in Surrey. After completing her early education, she studied at the Epsom School of Art, where she undertook a fine art course. A young, sensitive and highly accomplished artist, Sherree has a fascination and love for people and the social scene. This passion is shown through her impressionist style on canvas.

Her paintings of Henley Regatta, Royal Ascot and more recently her images of tennis and golf, have made Sherree particularly renowned in the sporting world. Many will remember Sherree being featured on BBC Television painting the Test Cricket Grounds.

Sherree is a highly accurate and factual artist. Her insistence on authenticity and her careful eye for detail has been recognised resulting in an important commission on the British Sporting Field which has enhanced her growing reputation as a prominent sporting artist.

Sherree has had many successful exhibitions at venues such as the Mall Galleries, the Royal Portrait Society in London. Important collectors of her work include members of the Royal Family.

For me inspiration comes from confrontation with nature which demands a response; a sunset, a heavy shower, powdered snow, sunrise over a loch, any or all of these elements might dictate the form that the response will take. I contemplate the landscape with amazement as it changes hourly, yet remains fundamentally the same. This is a concept I love to explore in my paintings - a blazing sunset reflected in a calm sea carries the implication of impending darkness, while heavy clouds in an overcast sky might predict an imminent storm...

I have always been attracted to coasts and seascapes in general, as I love the sense of infinity and endless searching that they give me. The subject of my next work will usually come to me when I am out by the sea, feeling at one with nature and the elements, and at this time I know what direction the composition will take. Back in my studio the painting begins to take shape in reality, and I aim to recreate both what I have seen and my own emotional response to it. I prefer to paint using oil as I find that this is the medium most adaptable to changes of light and mood.

Pam's dazzling seascapes originate on the rugged West Coast of Scotland with its isolated cottages and wild colours and amongst the majestic cliffs and fishing villages of the East Coast. In her own words: "A sense of a place is important in my work but for me it's not about capturing a scene with complete accuracy. Sometimes it is the elements and the untamed force of nature that inspire, but more than anything it is the essential quality of the light which can be found in the Scottish land and seascape. I often interpret the scene with abstract elements allowing the paint to work for me. I translate this light in terms of contrast and colour - often bold but always with subtlety and balance. I ultimately want to create a visual sensation and pleasing image."

Born in Leicester in 1969 Adam showed an early artistic talent which would eventually lead him to graduate from Kent Institute of Art and Design in Maidstone with a First Class Honours Degree. Following his graduation in 1992 Adam worked on several freelance projects for art galleries and magazines whilst developing his distinctive style. In 1996 he decided to commit himself to painting on a full time basis. His confidence was soon rewarded by invitations to exhibit at many prestigious galleries throughout the UK and the highly successful launch of his range of Limited Editions and Original Silkscreen Prints.

Adam draws his inspiration from the romantic element of the world around us, and describes his work as developing on a natural slant from story-telling. His unique view of life, characterised by stylised images, rich colours and thought provoking narratives, continue to take the art world by storm.
